This is not a gap anybody is hiding. Every platform your team uses publishes some version of the same split: they keep the service running, and recovering your content is on you. No, and the difference matters at exactly the wrong moment.
Trash and version history are retention features inside the same account. They are time-bound, they are usually scoped to a single page or file rather than a workspace, and they disappear along with the account if it is suspended, compromised or closed. A backup is an independent copy, in storage you control, that survives the loss of the original.
Native retention answers "I deleted a page yesterday." It does not answer "our workspace was wiped three weeks ago and nobody noticed."
They are responsible for keeping their service running. You are responsible for the data you put in it.
This is the shared responsibility model, and every major SaaS platform states some version of it in its own terms of service. The provider protects the infrastructure. Recovering your content after an accidental deletion, a departing employee, a bad integration or a compromised account is your side of the line.
You pick a backup and restore it back into the application, or download it as a file you can inspect first.
You choose which point in time to restore from, so you are not stuck with whatever the platform happens to still hold.
Test it before you need it. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Running one restore on a quiet afternoon is the cheapest thing you can do on this page.
You set the schedule. Daily is the sensible floor for a workspace your team edits every day, and you can run more frequently where the data changes faster.
Every run is monitored, and you are alerted when one fails. A silent failure is the failure mode that actually costs people their data, so a backup that stops working should be something you hear about that week rather than discover during a restore.

Connect your own S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage, an SFTP server or one of the other destinations in the catalog, and the backups land there. If you would rather not run storage at all, SimpleStorage is included.
